I know, I write gay fiction, some of which I happen to think is damn good stuff.
Maybe it sounds a bit conceited, but I am found of the work I have created. I specially am fond of the more issue driven books that I have penned. These are character books, and just like real life, none of us is perfect, but despite our faults, surely we are entitled to the same compassion, the same respect, that other people are? Just because we are Gay, doesn’t mean we are less human, less deserving of equal protection under the law.
The Secret is one of those that I think I hit that groove on pretty good.
The recent announcement by the California Supreme Court, ruling that it had to be MARRIAGE, and not some nampy pampy Civil Union bullcrap is a good example of why I write. Now don’t get me wrong, no way did anything I write have a thing to do with it, but it is about being Gay that many don’t seem to get. For some odd reason, they FEAR US.
Up until the 1970’s being Gay was considered a Mental Illness, and there are some today who still believe that. In fact, they are still determined to try and revert back to those times, because they FEAR GAYS. Why, I really don’t know, because it isn’t like we are out to turn every straight guy into a fuck buddy or something. We are just wanting what any other CITIZEN IS ENTITLED TO.
It is called EQUAL TREATMENT UNDER THE LAW.
It isn’t asking for something SPECIAL, but asking to be treated the same. Democracy is built on differences, on accepting that even those who disagree with the majority, have a right to the same laws, the same protection. That is all we want, and when we don’t get it, we get people like my character Robbie Fisher in The Secret who try to kill themselves.
We get Noah’s from The Locker who wind up being beaten, being attacked, not because they do anything wrong, but simply because they are Gay. That is why it has to be Marriage, and why the Supremes of California ruled it as such.
Now if only the rest of America would understand that, instead of rushing to deny us simple equality.
Right now, 44 states have laws or constitutional amendments banning same-sex marriage. Eight states do provide some spousal rights to same-sex partners, but only New York recognizes same-sex marriages performed elsewhere. (source – CBS News)
